Fontella Bass will always be remembered for her hit Rescue Me. That didn’t mean she didn’t record anything else of quality afterwards, just that it didn’t make the charts. Free is a perfect example of her post Rescue Me work. Most of the tracks are mellow Soul with a Southern feel to them

The 1965 classic "Rescue Me" is widely regarded as the greatest record Aretha Franklin never made. The superb single "Who You Gonna Blame" anticipated the 1972 release of the Sain-produced Free, a remarkably soulful set that is by far the most memorable LP of Bass' career. Attention from radio and retail was negligible, however, and after subsequent singles including "Now That I've Found a Good Thing" and "It's Hard to Get Back In" flopped, she exited Paula in 1974, not resurfacing until three years later with the Epic single "Soon as I Touched Hi.

Fontella Bass (born July 3, 1940, St. Louis, Missouri) is an American soul singer, who is best known for the 1965 R&B hit "Rescue Me", which she also co-wrote.

Fontella Bass (born July 3, 1940 in St. Louis, Missouri - died December 26, 2012 in St. Louis, Missouri) was an American soul and rnb singer, recording the iconic hit "Rescue Me" in 1965. The daughter of gospel singer Martha Bass (of the Clara Ward Singers), Bass was exposed to music at an early age. She was singing in her church's choir at just six years old. As a teenager, Bass was attracted by more secular music.
