The Blind Leading the Naked is the third album by Violent Femmes. It was produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads and released in 1986. The title is a play on the figure of speech "the blind leading the blind. The Blind Leading the Naked was the band's first album to reach the Billboard chart, peaking at and its only one to chart in Britain. The band said Leo Kottke and Fred Frith were both persuaded to appear on the album after approaching them at their concerts

Gordon Gano returns to his troubled teen persona and the Violent Femmes rock harder than on their previous two releases. A nice cover of the T. Rex classic "Children of the Revolution" and the yearning "I Held Her in My Arms," complete with a horn section, are highlights.

Violent Femmes began their career known as the band that is best at mixing folk, rock, and really weird, if not creepy, lyrics. The Blind Leading The Naked, VF's 3rd album, definitely follows in that tradition with songs such as "No Killing" and the ever-famous "Old Mother Reagan".

Violent Femmes went on to become one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the 1980s, selling more than 9 million albums by 2005. After the release of their third album The Blind Leading the Naked (1986), the band's future was uncertain and they split up in 1987, when Gano and Ritchie went solo. However, they regrouped a year later, releasing the album 3 (1989).
