This war was the consequence of the eleven Southern slave states declaring their separation from the United States. These slaves had formed the Confederate States of America or the Confederacy, under the guidance of Jefferson Davis. The American Civil War. Background of The American Civil War. In 1860 Republican Party leader, Abraham Lincoln had won the Presidential elections. Within a year of Lincolns win six more Southern slave states declared their independence and joined the Confederates. Prior to the war, a Peace Conference in 1861 was held which proved futile to solve the slavery problems.

The war started in May 1337 when King Philip VI of France attempted to confiscate the English territories in the duchy of Aquitaine (located in Southwestern France). It ended in July 1453 when the French finally expelled the English from the continent (except for Calais). The Hundred Years’ War (see map 5) was a series of chevauchees (plundering raids), sieges and naval battles interspersed with truces and uneasy peace. Map 5 (Hundred Years’ War)

They feared that the king would lose his sanity completely before the queen had an heir. When Henry lapsed into insanity again in 1453, Richard’s crown seemed within reach. However, Queen Margaret gave birth to a boy. Parliament then declared Richard as protector of the infant prince, and he ruled as regent. The fight for the throne began when Henry VI regained his sanity in 1455. The Wars of the Roses was not a true civil war, but rather battles between two noble families. Many of the Lancastrian supporters were defeated and Henry VI was thrown into the Tower of London. Parliament was at an impasse since the war was unprecedented. English law decreed that a new king could not be crowned until the old king died. Parliament declared Richard regent, and then disinherited Henry’s son.

The Civil War was fought between 1861 and 1865, and was the bloodiest conflict in American history. Pitting North against South, the Civil War had lasting repucussions that are still felt today. During the first two years of the war, Southern troops won numerous victories but saw their fortunes turn after losses at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in 1863. From then on, Northern forces worked to conqueror the South, forcing them to surrender in April 1865. Civil War: Causes & Secession. Photograph Courtesy of the Library of Congress. The roots of the Civil War can be traced to increasing differences between North and South and their growing divergence as the 19th century progressed.

Then Hitler turned against the . The Red Army was "the main engine of Nazism’s destruction," writes British historian and journalist Max Hastings in "Inferno: The World at War, 1939-1945. Through this overrun region, Marshal Zhukov told me, so many numbers of women, children and old men had been killed that the Russian Government would never be able to estimate the total. To be sure, as Snyder documents, the Soviet Union under Stalin also had the blood of millions on its hands. In the years preceding World War II, Stalinist purges led to the death and starvation of millions.

After America declared war on Japan, Germany, and Italy declared war on the US. America actually followed a Germany First strategy, mainly because it posed the greatest threat to the West, it had a larger military, and it seemed the most likely to develop newer and more lethal weapons. One of the worst tragedies of World War II was the Holocaust in which between 1933 and 1945 it is estimated that from 9-11 million Jews were killed. Only with the defeat of the Nazis were the concentration camps closed down, and the remaining survivors freed.

His eldest son, Edward, the Black Prince had died of the plague in 1376 and so his grandson, Richard, aged ten and son of the Black Prince, became king. Because Richard II was only ten years old, his uncle, John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, ruled the country. As Richard grew older he rebelled against his uncle and made decisions that were not popular with the most powerful men in the country. In 1399 John of Gaunt died and Richard II confiscated the land he had owned. John of Gaunt’s son, Henry, raised an army and when Richard surrendered took the throne as Henry IV.
