Elegant Refined Reserved Rollicking Sophisticated Stylish. Last of the Whorehouse Piano Players: The Original Sessions.
Freedom of Choice is the third studio album by the American new wave band Devo. It was originally released in May 1980 on the label Warner Bros. The album contained their biggest hit to date, "Whip It". Freedom of Choice was recorded between October 1979 and early 1980, at the Record Plant in Hollywood, California. The album saw the band moving in more of an overt synthpop direction, even though guitars still played a prominent role.
Our first taste of the album comes with the lead single/opening track, WHOREHOUSE. Despite the potentially risque implications of the title, the end result is more sugary sweet than overtly sexual. While there’s talk of being stuck inside a whorehouse, Berglund manages to forge a sweet-natured and shimmery dance-pop anthem, with big, chunky drum machines, lush flourishes of lasery synths, wacky fluctuations of pitch, and vocals brimming with a pronounced playfulness.
One of the most chilling albums ever made, with droning guitars, icy bass lines and stentorian vocals. And that’s not even considering the lyrics, about singer Ian Curtis' epilepsy and failing marriage. When Curtis hanged himself at age 23 on May 18th, 1980, Closer officially became the stuff of rock legend.
Exclusive discount for Prime members. This was recorded a little over nine years after Last Of The Whorehouse Piano Players - The Original Sessions w/ Milt Hinton & Gus Johnson, has the same line-up. The sound samples on this page describe this music better than I can with words, but I do want to mention that like the first album pairing the two pianos of Sutton and McShann, their playing is so seamless that unless you are a musician you may not know that they are playing as a duet backed by bass and drums. Also like the first album, the way Sutton blends his stride with McShann's Kansas City style blues is remarkable
