The Remains is the debut album by the American garage rock band the Remains, and was released on Epic Records in September 26, 1966 (see 1966 in music). Though the album was largely overlooked at the time of its original release, The Remains has since received recognition as one of the more cohesive efforts of the era. The Remains formed in 1964, quickly establishing themselves as a popular attraction across New England, and performing in sold-out venues to a loyal fanbase.
The Remains (sometimes referred to as "Barry and the Remains") were a mid-1960s rock group from Boston, Massachusetts, led by Barry Tashian. Although the Remains never achieved national success, they were very popular in New England, and were one of the opening acts on The Beatles' final US tour in 1966. The Remains broke up in 1966, but their music eventually attracted a strong international cult following.

This has a very high reputation in collector circles, but it is not the Remains at their best, principally because they record only one original ("Why Do I Cry"). The rest of the seven demos are high-energy run-throughs of typical live standards of the era, like "Hang on Sloopy," "I'm a Man," and "Johnny B. Goode.

The title track opens the album with acoustic picking that is eerily reminiscent of Metallica's 'Call of Ktulu', but then explodes into a hyper-speed explosion of thrash that barrels onwards at a hundred miles an hour. Max Cavalera gives the vocal performance of his career on this album, his rabid growl perfectly suited the raw, primitive feeling of the album. Second track 'Inner Self' slows the tempo but at no point loses the power of the opener. The drumming of Ivor Cavalera is strong, punishing and relentless in its pursuit of the riffing.
