Arena rock (also known as album-oriented rock, anthem rock, corporate rock, dad rock, melodic rock, pomp rock, and stadium rock) is a style of rock music that originated in the mid-1970s. As hard rock bands and those playing a softer yet strident kind of pop rock became increasingly popular, groups began creating material inherently designed for large audiences, and arena rock developed from their use of more commercially oriented and radio-friendly sounds.

This kind of straightforward, mainstream rock music - even sometimes disdainfully referred to as middle-of-the-road (MOR) rock - has gone by other names, of course: stadium rock, album rock, even the painfully broad, generic moniker pop/rock. Joan Jett, Chrissie Hynde, and Patty Smyth may not quite make the cut for this particular list, but that's only because Pat Benatar unleashed such an impressive stream of driving stadium rock specimens.
