Depeche Mode released their debut record in 1981, Speak & Spell, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Clarke left the band after the release of the album, leaving the band as a trio to record A Broken Frame, released the following year. Gore took over lead songwriting duties and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band to fill Clarke's spot, establishing a line up that would continue for the next thirteen years. In the new decade, Depeche Mode released Violator, a mainstream success. The subsequent album, Songs of Faith and Devotion, and the supporting Devotional Tour exacerbated tensions within the band to the point where Alan Wilder quit in 1995, leading to intense media and fan speculation that the band would split.
On 6 June 2011, Depeche Mode released Remixes 2: 81-11 on Mute. An inspiring collection of new and classic mixes of material covering their entire career, the album includes remixes of tracks from their 1981 debut Speak And Spell, through to 2009’s Sounds Of The Universe, and is the follow-up to 2004’s million-plus selling Remixes 81-04. These remixes reinforce Depeche Mode’s standing as one of the world’s most influential and innovative acts. Formed in 1981, Depeche Mode – Martin Gore, Dave Gahan and Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher – continue to win critical and commercial acclaim across the world both in the studio and on the road. All of the band’s 12 studio albums have reached the Top Ten in not only the UK and USA but 20 plus countries around the world including Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, and Belgium.
Exciter is Depeche Mode’s tenth studio album. The album was produced by Mark Bell of Björk and LFO fame. The album also launched the Exciter Tour, one of the band's most successful tours. Exciter debuted at number nine on the UK Albums Chart and at number eight on the Billboard 200, selling 115,000 copies in its first week in the US. Exciter was certified gold in the US on August 15th 2001. This double album came in a beautiful gatefold jacket and was pressed on 180g vinyl. The album was decently produced (Mark Bell) and mastered (Mike Marsh) but there were some serious problems with the pressing (WEA Mfg. Commerce). Unfortunately my copy, even after repeated cleanings, was very noisy and has a lot of crackle on side A. This is somewhat compensated for by the recording having an unusually strong signal level (+. 5 dB) which improves the signal-to-noise ratio. Gore took over lead songwriting duties and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band to fill Clarke's spot, establishing a line up that would continue for the next thirteen years
