Dizzy Gillespie's many collaborations with producer Norman Granz resulted in an impressive body of work that forms the basis for Verve Jazz Masters 10, a grab bag of bop, big band, and mainstream modern jazz recordings made between the years 1950 and 1963. The impressively packed roster of participants includes Roy Eldridge, Charlie Parker, and Sonny Stitt. In a sensible and very effective maneuver, the collection opens with the famous "Manteca" performed by Gillespie's big band at the Newport Jazz Festival. This single seven-minute performance will tell you everything you.

If you have only one album of Gillespie, or want to introduce his work to someone unfamiliar with it, it will be hard to find a better one than this. Those of us who have been privileged to see and hear Dizzy live in concert (and who are dwinding in number) know that this is art of the highest value that must be passed on to generations to come.

Dizzy Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic complexity previously unknown in jazz. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, his scat singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks and his light-hearted personality were essential in popularizing bebop.
