Talking Heads is a series of dramatic monologues written for BBC television by British playwright Alan Bennett. The two series were first broadcast in 1988 and 1998, and have since been broadcast on BBC Radio and included on the A-level and GCSE English Literature syllabus. A West End theatre production, also entitled Talking Heads, opened at the Comedy Theatre in January 1992 for a 10-week season, starring Patricia Routledge and Alan Bennett, who also directed, plus piano interludes by Jeremy Sams.

There's a strong autobiographical element here: Bennett recalls an aunt who used to prattle on about her day in a shoe shop so extensively that his father complained: "I wouldn't care, but you're no further on when she's finished. The characters live in terraced houses, but could as easily be contained in urns, or buried up to the waist in sand. Doris, who would rather die than relinquish her war against dust, is a northern relative of Winnie from Happy Days.

Next . Human Remains (TV Mini-Series 2000). Ten years after the original six terrific monologues of "Talking Heads", Alan Bennett returned with another series of six monologues, as varied and interesting as the first. The basic approach is the same. The pieces are about a half hour, the characters speak directly to the camera on sets that are theatrical rather than naturalistic. Once again there are 5 female and 1 male character in the group. And once again the acting is at a very high level, bringing these works to touching, funny, and occasionally very disturbing life

Alan Bennett's Talking Heads. Sue MacGregor reunites five key players, including Alan Bennett himself, to discuss his groundbreaking TV monologues, which told extraordinary stories about ordinary people. The alcoholic and Godless wife of a vicar, a curtain-twitching meddler who finds happiness in prison and a timid suburban housewife who falls in love with a murderer. Three of 12 seemingly remarkable yet ordinary characters who made up Alan Bennett's two series of ground-breaking TV monologues
