Lionel Handy & Jennifer Hughes. Ireland, Delius, Bax: Cello Sonatas. See Terms and Conditions for important information about costs that may apply for the MP3 version in case of returns and cancellations. Cellist Lionel Handy has presented us with another hot cd, this time of three British Cello Sonatas including deserving performances of music by John Ireland, Frederick Delius and Arnold Bax. In the case of Delius, Handy himself has been responsible for the cello transcription of the third violin sonata. He is very ably partnered by pianist Jennifer Hughes and the resulting disc is a valuable addition to works of this type and category.

FREDERICK DELIUS His four violin and piano sonatas were written between 1892 and 1930 and so chart comprehensively his creative development. Violin Sonata N. forms a part of the remarkable Indian summer of composition made possible by the blind and paralysed composer’s collaboration with Eric Fenby (1906-97). Lionel Handy arranged the Sonata for cello and piano in 2012 and on 23 November of that year he gave the first public performance of his transcription with Nigel Clayton as pianist at a concert held in The Warehouse, London to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Delius’s birth.

Lionel Handy (cello), and Jennifer Hughes (piano) give a splendid performance here, with an especial magic created in the gorgeous slow movement. The knack of a successful reading of this Sonata is an understanding of the musical self-referencing between movements, and the creation of the timeless ‘pastoral’ in the slow movement. In my opinion, he did not need to transcribe Delius’ Sonata No. 3: it works perfectly well in its original incarnation. That said, the transcription does ‘come off’. For the record, Delius completed this Sonata during March 1930. It was composed for the violinist May Harrison and was first performed at the Wigmore Hall on 6 November 1930 by the dedicatee and Arnold Bax. The score was written in the hand of Eric Fenby.
