First Step was the first album by the British group Faces, released in early 1970. The album was released only a few months after the Faces had formed from the ashes of the Small Faces (from which Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan hailed) and The Jeff Beck Group (from which Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood hailed.

The Faces' debut, 'First Step,' came out of the ashes of the Small Faces in March 1970. As for the music contained inside First Step, it too reflected the somewhat rushed and tentative collaboration of a band still coming to grips with each other's talents, strengths and weaknesses, and where to take their sound. So they used a cover of Bob Dylan's "Wicked Messenger" to get them out of the gate, before testing their budding songwriting on Lane's almost hymnal "Devotional," his Dylan-esque lead vocal turn for "Stone," and the sub-Stones groove concocted by Woody and Lane for "Shake, Shudder, Shiver.

Gate fold sleeve

Slightly later copies had a sticker of the new 1971 Cat number K 46053 placed over the WS 3000 cat no. on the rear of sleeve, before the new cat no. was finally printed in its place. The run out matrix was also scratched out, but the orange paper label still shows WS 3000.
