Symphonie n° 6 "Pathétique", Philadelphia Orchestra, dir. Eugene Ormandy. There's a big myth in the classical music industry that states that a conductor's latest version of a work must be somehow deeper, more profound, in short-better. As most conductors age, they simply get slower and more decrepit. This recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony 6, "Pathetique" by Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985) and the Philadelphia Orchestra is really disappointing compared with the 1960 recording by these forces on Sony Essential Classics ; been there, done that.

Also arranged for piano 4 hands by Tchaikovsky, 1893 It has become tradition in this Symphony for the 2nd clarinet to double on bass clarinet and play 4 notes for the bassoon, at a point where the bassoon takes over a descending line from the clarinet. Apart from the fact that the "hand over" is smoother when the timbres match, the passage goes to pppppp, which is easier on bass clarinet than on bassoon. The Symphony No. 74, also known as the Pathétique Symphony, is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's final completed symphony, written between February and the end of August 1893. The composer entitled the work "The Passionate Symphony", employing a Russian word, Патетическая (Pateticheskaya), meaning "passionate" or "emotional", that was then (mis-)translated into French as pathétique, meaning "solemn" or "emotive".
