Lalah Hathaway is the 1990 debut album of singer Lalah Hathaway. The album's first single was "Heaven Knows", produced by Derek Bramble. The follow-up single was "Baby Don't Cry", produced by Angela Winbush. The third single was "Somethin'". The disc featured two versions of the song "Night and Day" as well as two songs taken from the Lalah Hathaway album.
Lalah Hathaway’s smoky, sonorous voice anchors these concert performances of neo-soul. She re-introduces us to songs from throughout her career, as her band injects small yet striking touches, like the acoustic guitar flickering on Little Girl, Breathe, and the steadying bass behind I’m Coming Back, in which she soulfully and movingly recommits herself to a lover. She makes her mark on covers, too, including Little Ghetto Boy, a tribute to her late father Donny Hathaway, and Anita Baker’s Angel, a joyful sing-along with her adoring audience. Lalah Hathaway Live Lalah Hathaway.
Following the release of Where It All Begins, her sixth album, as well as subsequent appearances on recordings by a few other artists, Lalah Hathaway received some long overdue recognition. A live recording with Snarky Puppy - a stupefying update of Brenda Russell's "It's Something," a song she previously covered on her 1990 debut - won the 2014 Grammy for Best R&B Performance. The following year, due to her lead on Robert Glasper Experiment's interpretation of Stevie Wonder's "Jesus Children of America," she accepted a Grammy for Best Traditional.
In 2015, Lalah Hathaway recorded her first live album at the legendary Troubadour nightclub in West Hollywood where her famous father Donny Hathaway recorded his 1974 album Live. For Lalah Hathaway Live, she largely revisited hits from her 25 year long career like Baby Don’t Cry, and I’m Coming Back, and When Your Life Was Low. However, new songs like Whatever, This Is Your Life, and the introspective Mirror were among the tracklisting as well.

Lalah Hathaway says: This album is a dream fulfilled! It means everything to me to have built this record with and for the fans, as I mark my 25th year as a recording artist. I cannot wait to take this show on the road!!! Hathaway recorded her album live at the historic Troubadour Theater in Los Angeles earlier this year, in the same place where her father recorded half of his seminal 1972 album Donny Hathaway Live. Her seventh album Lalah Hathaway LIVE!, delivers the full-force and intimate live Lalah Hathaway experience that fans everywhere love.
My latest album, Lalah Hathaway LIVE, was the product of a special show at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, the same venue where my father recorded Donny Hathaway Live. That night changed me. It was total exposure for me. There were moments during the making of that recor. n that da. n that roo. n that stag. here I felt like I needed to detach. What I was experiencing was so intense and unchartered I wasn't sure what was going to happen to me when I really engaged. In a big way, the LIVE record represents a defining moment for me. I describe it as opening a door and pulling another one closed. It became a marker, a milestone. No more hiding from the pressure I sometimes feel, the fear of vulnerability, of showing myself to people, or facing the comparisons with my father and all the questions. It is time to embrace my truth, who I am – wholly. I ride so hard for my parents.
