Amir ElSaffar: Alchemy by Maurizio Zerbo, published on March 3, 2014.
Artist: Amir ElSaffar. Label: Pi Recordings. Iraqi-American trumpeter Amir ElSaffar has spent the past decade studying the maqam, the ancient tonal system that is the cornerstone of Arabic music. While Elsaffar has mastered Arabic music’s traditional forms (some of the tunes on Alchemy make use of scales gleaned from 3,000-year-old Mesopotamian tablets), it is his application of those forms to contemporary jazz that marks him as an innovator.

Jazz is built on exploring tradition, but nobody goes deeper with the idea than Iraqi American trumpeter Amir ElSaffar. Long recognized for tapping a Middle Eastern melodic structure called the maqam, ElSaffar works with the Sumerian/Babylonian modes that evolved into the Western tonal system and the building blocks of modal jazz.
