Beethoven, Ludwig van: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67Excerpt from the first movement, Allegro con brio, of Beethoven's Symphony No. 67; from a 1951 recording by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Otto Klemperer. 5 has undergone much analysis since Hoffmann’s colourful assessment, and its first four notes have drawn much attention. The pitches and rhythm of those notes-three Gs of equal duration followed by a sustained E-flat (below the G)-partially outline a C minor chord and ultimately announce the home key of the symphony. Perhaps more significantly, they form the rhythmic and melodic anchor of the entire composition. Beethoven himself allegedly described the figure as fate knocking at the door.

Serge Koussevitzky conducted the Boston Symphony from 1924 to 1949. He is noted for his passionate performances of Russian music, Richard Strauss, Sibelius, Ravel, Debussy, Berlioz, and 20th Century American composers, but his Beethoven could be very exciting. A double-bass virtuoso in his youth, Kousevitzky's BSO recordings often reveal the lower string parts better than his contemporaries among conductors. This recording of the Beethoven 5th with the BSO is difficult to find. The recording he made with the London Symphony is relatively easy to find but is not nearly as exciting as this.

67, was finished and first performed in 1808. It achieved fame soon enough, going on to become one of the most popular compositions in classical music. Beethoven was in his mid-thirties: his personal life was troubled by increasing deafness. In the world at large, the period was marked by the Napoleonic Wars. The symphony soon acquired status as a central item in the repertoire: groundbreaking in terms of both technical and emotional impact, it had a large influence on composers and music critics, and inspired work by such composers as Brahms. Instrument:Orchestra. 5 in Cm, Op. 67 - III. Allegro attacca.
