Hawkwind is the self-titled debut album by Hawkwind, released in 1970, originally on Liberty Records, later reissued on Sunset Records. This album is historic since it is one of the first space rock LPs. The Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, who was looking for a new venture after leaving the band, was pulled into Hawkwind playing some gigs and producing this album. After several unsuccessful attempts to capture the band's sound in the studio, it was decided simply to record it live in the studio.
Church of Hawkwind' was the 12th studio album released by Hawkwind. Being released in 1982, it was influenced by the sounds of the time and was centered around being a bit more experimental and more electronic. In actuality, the original intent was that the band name was to be 'Church of Hawkwind' because of the differing sound on the album, and also because it was more of a Dave Brock centered album, and could almost be considered a solo album. Most of Hawkwind's other albums featured contributions from all of the band, but this time, Brock was the main songwritier.
This album was the very first release of the band and recording for it was started only a few months after the band’s, rather disastrous, first live appearance. It must be said that for an outfit that just months before had no set songs to play, (And indeed not even a name), and was only able to deliver a highly chaotic jammed version of a then popular song by another artist, it was rather a tour the force to get the album ready in the first place. But, so far for the good news. Had it not been for the sixth track of the album, the lengthy Seeing it as You Really Are, the band would have run a serious risk of sinking into oblivion after just one release.
Produced by former Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, Hawkwind's first album was rightfully compared to Pink Floyd's early sound: an appealing conglomeration of hippie rock grooves and interplanetary guitar trips set to the phosphorescent wandering of Dik Mik's electronics and Nik Turner's cool sax playing. Hawkwind may not have been their most lucrative album, but it's where it all began.
On 21 June 2010, Hawkwind released a studio album entitled Blood of the Earth on Eastworld Records. During and since the Blood of the Earth support tours, Hone's primary on-stage responsibility shifted to bass, while Mr. Dibs moved to a more traditional lead singer/front man role. In 2011, Hawkwind toured Australia for the second time. It was announced in November 2016 that Hawkwind were recording a new studio album, entitled Into The Woods. t Magnus Martin replaced both Hone and Blake in the lineup for the new album, leaving the 2017 core band composed of Brock, Chadwick, Mr Dibs, Wheaton and Martin.
Progressive Rock Psychedelic Rock Space Rock.
Concerning Hawkwind's debut, however, I have my mind pretty much set in stone: Hawkwind is pure, quintessential, raffinated, unadulterated, clarion psychedelic shite. It may not be objective, but it sure feels like it. Worst of all - it's boring psychedelic shite. it's another Hawkwind album. Fortunately, another good one. Don't worry - they're not about to leave their successful formula so easy.
