Trypticase soy agar or tryptone soya agar (TSA) and Trypticase soy broth or tryptone soya broth (TSB) with agar are growth media for the culturing of bacteria. They are general-purpose, nonselective media providing enough nutrients to allow for a wide variety of microorganisms to grow. They are used for a wide range of applications, including culture storage, enumeration of cells (counting), isolation of pure cultures, or simply general culture.

Tryptic Soy Broth (Soybean-Casein Digest Medium) is a general purpose medium used in qualitative procedures for the cultivation of fastidious and non-fastidious microorganisms from a variety of clinical and nonclinical specimens. TSB is a nutritious medium that will support the growth of a wide variety of microorganisms, including common aerobic, facultative and anaerobic bacteria and fungi. This formulation is included in the USP as a medium for use in performing microbial enumeration tests and tests for specified microorganisms when testing nonsterile pharmaceutical products.

Tryptic Soy Agar is a universal medium which supports the growth of wide variety of microorganisms (both gram positive as well as gram negative bacteria grow in this medium). It is used for the isolation and cultivation of wide variety of microorganisms. Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA) is mainly used as an initial growth medium for the purposes of observing colony morphology, developing a pure culture and achieving sufficient growth for further biochemical testing and culture storage. TSA slants are being used to store and ship bacterial cultures. Tryptic Soy Agar contains digests of casein and soybean meal. The combination of casein and soy peptones renders the medium nutritious by supplying organic nitrogen, particularly amino acids and longer-chained peptides. Sodium chloride is added to maintain the osmotic equilibrium and agar is the solidifying agent. TSB Medium Preparation.

A tryptic soy agar is a general growth medium used to isolate and cultivate microorganisms. It is also intended to store, maintain, and transport pure cultures of microorganisms. It is a universal medium because it supports the growth of different types of microorganisms including Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. It was in 1955 that Leavitt and his group discovered tryptic soy agar. They facilitated the growth of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Basically, tryptic soy agar is a general purpose medium; a medium perfect to support fastidious heterotrophs

Tryptic Soy Agar is a medium very rich in nutrients for "general use" in microbiological laboratories. Containing two peptones obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of casein and soy protein, this medium supports the growth of a great variety of microorganisms, including fastidious aerobes and anaerobes. If desired, antibiotics can easily be incorporated as well as other supplements or inhibitory agents.
