The Wake is the second studio album by British neo-progressive rock band IQ, released in June 1985 by Sahara Records. Recorded at Falconer Studios in London from March to April 1985, it was produced by Mike Holmes and Tim Esau. Widely recognized as a definitive recording of the 1980s neo-progressive rock movement, The Wake remains IQ's only album to reach the UK Charts, peaking at number 72 with a stay of one week.
IQ are a British neo-progressive rock band founded by Mike Holmes and Martin Orford in 1981 following the dissolution of their original band The Lens. Although the band have never enjoyed major commercial success and had several line up changes, IQ have built up a loyal following over the years and are still active as of 2018.
IQ's second album, simply titled The Wake, was released in 1984 after a spectacular debut in Tales from the Lush Attic. With this album, the group decided to focus on more concise pieces rather than sprawling epics, and to simply put it they hit the mark once again. Although the sound of this album is very 80s, there are a lot of progressive moments and times when you feel like you could listen to this stuff forever.
