Agostinho dos Santos (April 25, 1932 – July 11, 1973) was a Brazilian singer and composer of bossa nova, MPB and rock and roll, active from the early 1950s until his premature death in an airplane accident in 1973. Dos Santos is best known today for lending his voice to the soundtrack of the classic 1959 film Orfeu Negro.
He toured through the . Italy, Germany, Portugal, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico, perfoming in the . and in Brazil with Johnny . .In the next year, he recorded the LP Uma Voz E Seus Sucessos, dedicated to Tom Jobim and Dolores Duran's songs. The album contained "Estrada Do Sol," which remained as one of his biggest hits. He was then invited by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes to record the soundtrack (together with João Gilberto) of the Marcel Camus film Orfeu do Carnaval, which launched several of the most famous classics of the soon-to-be bossa nova internationally).
Agostinho dos Santos - Vanguarda (1964) RGE XRLP 5231. 1958 saw two album releases, Agostinho Espetacular and Antônio Carlos Jobim e Fernando César na Voz de Agostinho dos Santos from which the latter led to an invitation from Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes to record for the upcoming movie Orfeu Negro by Marcel Camus. Although João Gilberto also auditioned for the vocal part, he was refused as his voice was unsurprisingly considered not ‘black’ enough.

Agostinho dos Santos. Agostinho dos Santos was born in São Paulo, in the neighborhood called Bela Vista or Bixiga. One of Dos Santos' first jobs in music was singing at a taxi-dancing club called O maravilhoso in São Paulo. Early in his career, Dos Santos sang with the orchestra of Osmar Milani, and on a lunchtime radio program hosted by Manuel.
