I owned the Collegium Aureum renderings about 1972 on a two-LP Harmonia Mundi set issued by RCA Victrola that opened up like a magazine. These recordings clock in at a total time of about 105 minutes, just a couple minutes faster than that old East German recording that was probably played at meetings of the Flat Earth Society when Karajan's Brandenburgs couldn't be found.

An excellent recording of Bach's masterpiece. The playing is clear and transparent, laid back, smooth and floating, but vivid and grooving at the same time, letting the music breathe and giving the listener room to understand the piece. The pressing is excellent, the sound is open, clear and broad, just as it has to be - vinyl at its best. Maybe a bit strange, but I like it, is the fact that the Contrapuncti XIII to XVII are played on harpsichords; the last Contrapunctus XVIII is played by the string quartet again - ending suddenly, as the piece is uncompleted; Bach died over it, it is said. The chorale that is sometime added to the suite is not featured here. Compared to other interpretations, I'd say this one from 1962 is much better than the one by The Fine Arts Quartet which is much too fast and doesn't catch the groove of the piece. It also beats the one by Musica Antiqua which is not as clear and subtle, also a bit too lifeless, lacking the groove and playfulness of the Collegium Aureum. The version by Karl Münchinger is a bit too slow in my ears, loosing the groove at the other side of the scale; same with the one by Max Pommer, which is also too slow and almost boring, even though I very much like the warm sound of the instruments and the very decent, subtle, unpretentious approach. On the other hand, the Collegium Aureum version is not as good as the state-of-the-art-interpretation by the Keller Quartet on ECM, which is even more transparent, subtle and delicate - you hear every little tremolo with a presence and vividness every other record lacks; also the sound is the clearest and freshest available. With the Emerson String Quartet I don't have an opinion yet - it doesn't strike me, don't know why. Other interpretations, that of the Juilliard String Quartet for example, I didn't hear. In the end, it comes down to Keller and the Collegium - for me at least. And because the Collegium record is released on vinyl, it is simply the best interpretation that vinyl lovers can ever get.
