Don Williams, the Country Music Hall of Fame member whose imposing height and warm, reassuring voice earned him the nickname Gentle Giant, died Friday, September 8th, after a short illness. An internationally popular country star, Williams recorded dozens of hit songs, including Tulsa Time, Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good and It Must Be Love. Just one day before he turned 78 last May, the tribute album Gentle Giants: The Songs of Don Williams was issued. A testament to his widespread and long-lasting influence, the LP featured performances of beloved Williams hits by Alison Krauss, Chris Stapleton, Pistol Annies, Brandy Clark, Keb’ Mo’, Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, Lady Antebellum, songwriter Roger Cook, Dierks Bentley, John Prine, and Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires.

Of the Don Williams songs released during his 1989-1992 stint with RCA, this reassuring love ballad from the pen of . Interestingly enough, Williams wasn’t the first to chart with the song. That distinction falls to Loggins, who recorded it with Gus Hardin in 1985. However, their version only made it to No. 72 – more than a few positions lower than the No. 4 peak of Williams’ recording. 13. Don Williams - "Walkin’ A Broken Heart". Lady Antebellum turned in a stirring performance of the song on the recent Gentle Giants tribute disc. 10. Don Williams - "Nobody But You". Martin and John Jarrard penned this romantic love song for the singer, which was all over the Country charts during the summer months of 1983. It was one of three singles from his classic Yellow Moon album. 9. Don Williams - "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend".
The master for both "Come Early Morning" and "Amanda," along with Williams' other recordings for JMI Records, were sold to ABC-Dot Records in 1974 Billy Joe Royal released a version of the song. US Hot Country Songs (Billboard).
A tribute album, Gentle Giants: The Songs of Don Williams, including performances by Lady Antebellum and Garth Brooks, was released this year. In 1997 he released a DVD, Into Africa, recorded live in Harare, Zimbabwe. His most robust following outside the United States, however, was always in England (although he was popular elsewhere in Europe as well). He was enthusiastically received at the 1976 Wembley Festival and performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London
On hearing the album, Don Williams sent the following message to all the participants of the Gentle Giants tribute: It was a very emotional and humbling experience to hear you all perform these songs that have been such a part of my life. Fantastic! I loved each and every performance and your interpretations of the songs. I love a good covers album, especially when it has various artists covering one artists songs and it’s even better when it is country music and furthermore, some of country musics finest artists. Another great thing about gathering a group of influential artists together to create an album of covers from a legendary artist such as Don Williams is it gives the songs a new life and it brings the music of that artist to a new audience as well as old and gives fans of Don Williams perhaps the opportunity to discover artists they never. Gentle Giants is in every way fantastic.
The result was the album Don Williams Volume One (1973), which contained one of his most praised tracks, Amanda, described by the music historian Bill Malone as combining the flavour of old-time country music with a middle-of-the-road approach. Two more albums followed before I Wouldn’t Want to Live If You Didn’t Love Me gave Williams his first country No 1 hit single in 1974. A tribute album, Gentle Giants: The Songs of Don Williams, featuring versions of his songs by Garth Brooks, Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum, was released earlier this year. The title was a reference to his nickname, the Gentle Giant. Like Reeves before him, Williams appealed to listeners on several continents. He toured Australia and New Zealand, India and Latin America, and was especially popular in Africa, where he had enthusiastic fans in South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Ivory Coast.
