Taken from radio broadcast tapes of a concert given in late 1965, Hero of the Game sees the already legendary political folk singer Phil Ochs running through a set of almost completely unreleased material, with all but one of the tracks performed here already put to tape at the time of this concert.

During this December 1965 radio broadcast, Phil plays just one already-released song. Several of the numbers included would remain unreleased for many years before finally being issued on retrospective collections. His last studio release was 'Greatest Hits' - a spoof title as it was composed entirely new material albeit with a more country and rock edge that his previous work. In 1973, whilst travelling in Africa, he was violently mugged and, as a direct result, lost the three top notes of his vocal range. This appalling experience exacerbated some already apparent mental problems and paranoia.

The live album 'Gunfight At Carnegie Hall' aroused controversy for the unlikely covers of Buddy Holly & Elvis Presley. Most people know the basic story behind Phil's ill-fated "gold suit" tour, especially this infamous concert at New York's Carnegie Hall, so I won't get too much into that. Unfortunately, this album amounts to just a few audio snapshots of that event. A&M, I believe, were going for a "NEW" Phil Ochs album, rather than a traditional live album, much of the included songs being Ochs material that was new to the public

Love Me, I'm a Liberal" is a satirical song by Phil Ochs, a . Originally released on his 1966 live album, Phil Ochs in Concert, "Love Me, I'm a Liberal" was soon one of Ochs's most popular concert staples. The song mocks the differences between what liberals say and what they do. Introducing the song on the live album, Ochs said: In every American community there are varying shades of political opinion. One of the shadiest of these is the liberals.
