Criteria: These Fusion Albums were chosen to showcase the artists musical vision through their originality, influence, instrumental quality and creative inspiration. Definition: In the late 1960s, jazz musicians began mixing the forms and improvisational techniques of jazz with the electric instruments of rock and the rhythms of soul and rhythm and blues. At the same time, some rock artists began adding jazz elements to their music. Fusion has gone on to often include world music and other elements

Straight outta the very same fusion scene that yielded now-iconic records like Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew and Herbie Hancock’s Head Hunters, many of the artists who would pioneer this relaxing, sensual offshoot arrived at it quite naturally. Explore the soul sounds of the 1970s for long enough and you’re bound to stumble into its jazzier corners, expressed in a number of the latter genre’s splintering trends during the decade. Indeed, with my deepest apologies to Chuck Mangione, some of smooth jazz’s biggest commercial successes do not appear below, as a matter of personal taste but also in the service of shining light on less heralded records.

The Comet Is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery. Users' Highest Rated Jazz Fusion Albums of All Time. The Best Albums of All Time. MORE GENRES: Alt-Country.

The first fully-formed fusion album, and together with its 1970 follow-up, Bitches Brew, the genre’s early route map. In A Silent Way is introspective and understated, Bitches Brew is extrovert and abrasive, but both are fusions with rock rather than funk. Funk-focused fusion followed a couple of years later. Tony Williams joined Miles Davis at the remarkably young age of 17, in 1963. He left right after recording In A Silent Way to concentrate on power-trio Lifetime with John McLaughlin and organist Larry Young. The group’s ferocious debut, Emergency! – the exclamation mark is wholly justified – is one of a handful of fusion albums which matches the intensity of Bitches Brew. Another i. he Mahavishnu Orchestra The Inner Mounting Flame (CBS LP, 1971).

Breezin' is the fifteenth studio album by jazz/soul guitarist George Benson. It is his debut on Warner Bros. The album marked the beginning of Benson's most successful period commercially. Breezin' topped the Pop, Jazz and R&B album charts in Billboard and spun off two hit singles, the title song (which has become a smooth jazz standard) and "This Masquerade," which was a top ten pop and R&B hit. The album itself was certified triple Platinum by the RIAA.
