Album · 2016 · 11 Songs. Recording as Midland, Harry Agius specializes in bumping, bass-heavy house, but the debut album from AKASE, his duo with singer/songwriter Robbie Redway, has more melancholy moods in mind. Agius keeps the tempos slow, the beats muted, and the synths glowing, while Redway's plaintive falsetto evokes exquisite sadness. Another day my life has turned to dust," he sighs in "Rust," over a splintered beat; "Call" is just as pained, but also more sensual, thanks to its shuffling, sidewinding groove.
Graspers is the debut album from AKASE, the ‘coming together’ of friends and musicians Harry Agius (AKA Midland) and Robbie Redway. Released January 22nd, 2016, on the !K7 label, Graspers is about ‘capturing emotions and brief moments in time. Including singles Rust and Murmur, Graspers is produced by both Agius and Redway, featuring vocals from Redway, and much help from producer Ewan Pearson.
AKASE - Graspers Midland isn't the first among his peers to dabble with pop. Will Saul, who A&R'd this LP for !K7, released Getting Closer in 2013. George Fitzgerald, a regular on Saul's Aus label alongside Midland, followed last year with Fading Love. All three artists have made sprightly music for the dance floor, but their pop efforts are morose-not so much a journey into the charts as an exploration of ailing souls. Maybe they'd work better without the glossy, prepackaged sentiment, or perhaps the clichés would float if the music wasn't so gloomy
The debut full-length by Akase is the result of several years' worth of collaboration from two longtime friends, as well as final touches by veteran dance music producer Ewan Pearson. Tech-house producer Midland lays down tracks which are detailed but don't get in the way of Robert Redway's melancholy, wistful vocals.
