Time To Pretend" and the accompanying album was their debut Columbia release. When MGMT performed this on the Late Show with David Letterman, they were clad in full-length capes. VanWyngarden told the Manchester Evening News : "He didn't even come over afterwards and shake our hands. He replied: "I think that's cool
Time to Pretend" is a song by the American indie band MGMT, released as the lead single from their debut studio album Oracular Spectacular (2007) on March 3, 2008. An earlier version had been released on their Time to Pretend EP. The single was released as a 7" and CD single featuring the B-sides "Weekend Wars" (BBC Radio 1 Session) and "Metanoia", respectively
MGMT – Time to Pretend. Forget about our mothers and our friends We were fated to pretend. I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home Yeah I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone. But there is really nothing, nothing we can do Love must be forgotten. life can always start up anew The models will have children, we'll get a divorce, We'll find some more models, everything must run its course
Columbia wanted to include the song, & To Pretend& on MGMT& debut album but they didn& own the master of the original recording – necessitating the re-record. VanWyngarden and Goldwasser were asked to choose a producer for the album by the laebl. Neither were entirely sure what a producer did at that stage in their career, but they loved the drum sound on the recent Flaming Lips records. They asked Dave Fridmann, the man responsible for that sound, to come on board for the recording of the album. Fridmann& work on this record is notable not just because of what.
The strange thing about the suddenness of MGMT’s fame is that their breakthrough 2007 hit ‘Time To Pretend’ was in fact included here on this EP which was released in early 2005! And the versions are pretty much identical, with only slightly glossier production livening up the latter version a little more. Either rendition is top-notch, with a super hooky keyboard component positioning itself in your mind against the computerized space-rock background
