Handel: Messiah, HWV 56. Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Toronto Symphony Orchestra & Sir Andrew Davis. Sir Andrew Davis pranked by Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The MSO’s Chief Conductor got a surprise when he began conducting Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries in Toronto on his 75th birthday. A refined sound from the orchestra, with stellar soloists and deft work from the Adelaide Chamber Singers. Classical Music, Vocal & Choral. Does this treasured Christmas tradition need a little more TLC? December 6, 2018
by Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Messiah, HWV 56, Pt. 1: Sinfonia. Grave - Allegro moderato by Toronto Symphony Orchestra. This might be forgivable if the performance by the rest of the Toronto Symphony and Mendelssohn chorus was laudable, but it's not - the live recording showcases everyone's faults - with the chorus tonally flat and thickly recorded, and the soloists, (with the exception of tenor Andrew Staples) heavy and forced.
The transcendent glory of Handel's beloved classic Messiah is taken to new heights on Sir Andrew Davis’s majestic, must-hear rendition, recorded live in December 2015. Without detracting from the innate power of the original, the conductor’s score calls for moments of drama, pathos and even, sometimes, whimsy
