Special thanks are due to Achim Roedelius and Möbi Moebius ("Cluster") for their advice and encouragement in Cologne, and to Robert Fripp and David Bowie for the same in Berlin. Recorded at Basing Street Studios, London and Conny's Studio outside Cologne, West Germany. No noise reduction systems were used on the original recordings. Mastered DSD by at Super Audio Mastering.
Brian Eno’s fourth solo album, originally released on the Polydor imprint in December 1977, surreptitiously pulled off the not-inconsiderable feat of uniting both factions as an almost incidental by-product of its casual otherness. Topped and tailed by ‘Here He Comes’ and ‘Spider And I’, Side Two of Before And After Science utilises what, for Eno, are quite conventional, linear melodies. Within the crosscurrents of some of the most innovative moments of his career-including collaborations with David Bowie and his own work in the burgeoning field of ambient music-Brian Eno found time to record Before and After Science, which encapsulated the best of his '70s work while anticipating many trends of the '80s. Synth-pop, electro-funk, New Romanticism-all the keyboard-infused ideas of the impending decade were heralded in Backwater, Spider and I, and Kurt’s Rejoinder. The album's second half delves into more ambient-influenced material, though Julie With. and.

However, 'Before & After Science' is Brian Eno's 1977 masterful follow-up to the seminal 1975 'Green World'. Over the many years I've gravitated to this work more insatiably than 'Green World' mostly due to it being a far clearer & more direct musical recording. With the exception of the galloping funky beat of 'No One Receiving', 'Science' doesn't sound like a 70's LP. The instrumentals are pristine clear & luscious. The up-tempo tracks like 'King's Lead Hat' have a progressive timelessness.
