The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings.

The Velvet Underground is the third album released by the eponymous band. For example, Cale wanted to record this album with amplifiers submerged underwater. Reed would have none of that and gave the band an ultimatum – either Cale goes or he destroys the band. The other members didn’t want to fire him, but faced with the choice of continuing without Cale.
While The Velvet Underground had as distinctive a sound as any band, what's most surprising about this album is its diversity. Here, the Velvets dipped their toes into dreamy pop ("Sunday Morning"), tough garage rock ("Waiting for the Man"), stripped-down R&B ("There She Goes Again"), and understated love songs ("I'll Be Your Mirror") when they weren't busy creating sounds without pop precedent.
But the Velvet Underground are the only band to have released multiple self-titled debuts. Technically, their first album was 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico, a bracing collision of Brill Building pop classicism and avant-garde noise terrorism that, by the time White Light/White Heat was released in 1968, had progressed to all-out warfare.

When the band finished, they had marked the origin of noise rock through a 17-and-a-half minute jam that turned rock’n’roll into what Reed described as a scene of total debauchery and decay. The Velvet Underground matched their ambition on their debut album with Heroin, but Sister Ray, White Light/White Heat’s epic finale, catalogues each member’s musicianship, fleshing out their raw sensibilities and then stretching them out to a point of no return. By the time the Velvet Underground recorded their self-titled album, they seemed to have pushed rock to its ultimate boundaries. The world wasn’t ready for their ingenuity and their failure to make headway commercially caused friction between Reed and Cale about the future direction of the band.
