Aqualung is the fourth studio album by the rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1971. It is regarded, despite the band's disagreement, as a concept album featuring a central theme of "the distinction between religion and God". The album's "dour musings on faith and religion" have marked it as "one of the most cerebral albums ever to reach millions of rock listeners". Aqualung's success signalled a turning point in the band's career, which went on to become a major radio and touring act.

The fourth studio album from Jethro Tull. Though regarded by many fans and critics as a concept album, the band rejects this label. The album’s first half is partially inspired by pictures of London homeless, taken by Ian Anderson’s wife. The second half is more philosophical, dealing mainly with Anderson’s views on organized religion. Featuring Ian Anderson & Martin Barre. Producers Ian Anderson & Terry Ellis. Writers Ian Anderson & Jennie Anderson. More Jethro Tull albums.
Jethro tull, studio albums, 1971. Aqualung, to many, is Tull’s masterpiece. The title track and Locomotive Breath, with their catchy riffs, would be joined by My God, Cross-Eyed Mary, and Hymn 43 as classic rock staples. There’s no arguing with its commercial success, having sold more than seven million copies and continuing to outsell anything in the back catalog. Shop aqualung on burning shed. Yet, Aqualung is arguably Tull’s most misunderstood album. Critics dubbed it a concept album, particularly for Anderson’s critical, skeptical views of organized religion,.
Jethro Tull vocalist and flute player Ian Anderson wrote the song and called it "a guilt-ridden song of confusion about how you deal with beggars, the homeless. The album cover was a watercolor painting of the character Aqualung created by the artist Burton Silverman. Jethro Tull's manager Terry Ellis commissioned him after seeing his work in Time magazine. Burton took some photos of Ian Anderson wearing his old overcoat before he painted the cover, and the resulting work looked a lot like a haggard version of Ian, who was not pleased with the painting.
