Cicadidae is the natural outcome of Kammerflimmer Kollektief's evolution from a hybrid jazz electronic outfit to experimental improvisers and finds the band actually playing as a band with brass and string instruments, electronics, drums, and keyboards. It makes Kammerflimmer a sort of Black Dice for downtempo ambient music - while their lush, tweaked sounds (and decidedly warm tones) are similar to both Four Tet and Manitoba, the songs on Cicadidae have a much looser rock feeling. Take "Neumond Inselhin," which starts the album off with a gentle ticking, gurgling, and chiming.

Kammerflimmer Kollektief is a German musical group, founded by Thomas Weber, consisting of Heike Aumüller, Johannes Frisch, Christopher Brunner, Heike Wendelin, and D. Wurm. They play a mixture of jazz, noise, electronic music, free jazz and experimental music. Formed in 1997, they have released to date 8 albums, and have appeared on many jazz and electronic compilation albums. In 2012 they formed the band The Schwarzenbach together with German writer Dietmar Dath and released the album "Farnschiffe".

Kammerflimmer Kollektief's album Cicadidae bubbled to the surface in the sea of CDs and somehow captured the harsh beauty that my life was at that point. Shimmering and elusive, each track is a brilliantly orchestrated little story of brass, strings and percussion with grinding, crackly, computer-programmed noise and beats all melded together to form a seamless organic entity. A soundtrack of inspiration for a society gone mad. No matter how crazy life seemed to get, I could listen to this album and things somehow seemed, I don't know, not better, but it was okay that things weren't okay. Like the natural ebb and flow of confusion and inspiration made sense.

I love this record. It's got a very sexy chilled out vibe... sounds like a mix of electronica, cool jazz, experimental, even noise, though not in a distancing way. It's an instrumental album, one that can be listened to intensely (terrific headphone listen), or just as a great soundtrack to doing something else without paying attention, just letting it color the atmosphere (great room sound listen too). The cover art reflects the music well... sexy, mysterious, out of sorts but beautifully so. Too bad it's also now out of print. Regrettably under known. Of the Kammerflimmer Kollektief records I've purchased and heard, this one is my favorite, though the others are good too. The review of 10 years ago says it better. I like that the words dreamy and frenetic are both used. It's lush and dreamy, but isn't sleepy or boring... it's both "nice" and challenging. Recommended.
