Fernando Germani (org). 3) Chorales, No. 3 in A minor. César Franck Composer. Fernando Germani (org). Prelude and Fugue on the name B-A-C-H. In the early 1960s the great Italian virtuoso Fernando Germani recorded three LPs for HMV at Selby Abbey. They became well known and much admired, especially the first disc, of music by Franck, Liszt, Reger and Widor, reissued in HMV’s ‘Concert Classics Series’. The marvellous sounds of the abbey’s four-manual Hill organ were brilliantly captured by EMI’s engineers. In music by Franck and Frescobaldi, his tempi are broad and majestic; by using the organ’s variety of colours and dynamics, he conveys Frescobaldi’s changes of mood and Franck’s symphonic grandeur.

Composed By – César Franck.

All proceeds will be donated to the Selby Abbey organ appeal. The CD is a new compilation of works originally recorded at the Abbey in 1962 by Fernando Germani. The Italian virtuoso was the Pope's organist at St Peter's in Rome and is considered one of the outstanding organists of all time. The highlight of the CD is his performance of Charles-Marie Widor's Toccata (Symphony No 5 in F minor Op 42, No 1) which Marc Rochester of Gramophone magazine considers unsurpassed. The CD also includes works by Frescobaldi, César Franck, Franz Liszt and Max Reger

Selby Abbey is an Anglican parish church in the town of Selby, North Yorkshire, England. It is Grade I listed. It is one of the relatively few surviving abbey churches of the medieval period, and, although not a cathedral, is one of the biggest. It was founded by Benedict of Auxerre in 1069 and subsequently built by the de Lacy family. On 31 May 1256, the Abbey was bestowed with the grant of a Mitre by Pope Alexander IV and from this date was a "Mitred Abbey".

The 1909 organ, on which Germani recorded, is now in a parlous state and desperately needs restoration. On that final LP were the four Frescobaldi pieces, with which this Selby disc opens. Both the Franck Chorales exude taut grandeur of utterance, but also a real sense of refinement.
