Metal Box is the second album by Public Image Ltd, released by Virgin Records on 23 November 1979. Records and Island Records in the United States.

Metal Box‘ will be issued in a square metal tin (CD & LP) (the 1979 original was issued in a round metal film canister) with an embossed PiL logo. Album‘ will be issued in a square card box with de-bossed artwork.

Metal Box came out less than a year after PiL's debut Public Image: First Issue yet it was nothing like it's predecessor. Things had changed, and so had PiL. While outside pressures mounted PiL channeled their energies (negative and positive) into a record that would set them apart back in 1979, and indeed today in 2016. The album was originally released as three 45rpm 12" singles housed in a metal film canister as made by The Metal Box Company in London's East End; hence the name.

The expanded Metal Box is presented in a new square metal tin design and featuring 72 pages of liner notes and postcard or art print inserts. It features a disc of non-LP material (including B-sides, remixes, and live sessions for John Peel and The Old Grey Whistle Test), a famously unplanned live concert recorded in Manchester before a TV engagement, and a disc of 10 unreleased mixes and rough takes. PiL, which emerged from a 17-year hiatus in 2009 and released its most recent album, What the World Needs No. last fall, will England and Belgium in November. Side B ends with a locked groove which repeats the last few seconds of "Swan Lake" endlessly until the needle is lifted from the record.

I have metal box - but I have a question for others that may own it.My copy 'sounds' great - very near mint - but it really seems to track poorly almost like it's semi-skipping. I'm not sure how it could sound great and track poorly at the same time - with there being no damage to the vinyl. I have a new Grado black cart - and it set up at a hi-fi store so I'm wondering if they might have made it too touchy to track well on a 12in 45?

The differences between the various releases are easily explained. You could cook bacon & eggs in the original vinyl's tin lid...but you can only cook a single egg in the smaller CD releases' tin lid...All sound great but you may hear varying "crackling" sounds.....

Cooking bacon & eggs would have been easier than actually trying to get the discs out of the damn tin- which when you did manage it you had no idea which song you may be listening to -as by this point the 'track titles on white slip' had usually been lost...
Question, I've got a gatefold copy of Second Edition with "Promotional Copy Not For Sale) embossed in the bottom left of the front cover that doesn't seem to be listed here, does anyone have this copy or know what it's worth perhaps?
I have the same copy. It's listed here, but not as a promo. Sort by country, and it's the last US listing.
Anyone have trouble playing the locked groove on an automatic TT?
Well, unfortunately you won't be able to play it on automatic...

Has anyone tried to clean the metal box to remove evidence of oxidation? It seems they all have this problem. I don't want to make it worse so I am holding off for now.
Silver paint seems alright on a laptop so maybe on this
I don't think John Lydon would have intended for the metal casing to be cleaned.... Oxidation is a natural occurrence... Rust never sleeps.. ;)
I was approaching reaching the milestone of 1000 LPs after 25 years of collecting, and obviously was trying to decide on getting something classic, iconic and just excellent to fill that spot that I didn't already have.I filled that slot today with this album after seeing both Jah Wobble and John Lydon live for the first time in May this year.So glad I chose this!
The matrix numbers on my copy are different from what's listed above. Mine are: A-2, B-2, C-1, D-1, E-1, F-1. I got it in California in 1980, so maybe these are what was in the exported copies.
Did they really print 50.000 copies of this?
I believe it was initially stated that there were 30,000 copies pressed but some years later read that it was more than this ,so 50,000 does seem likely- there certainly wasn't a shortage of copies ..My memory is it cost around £7 in '79 which was a fair bit ...there had recently been an increase in petroleum prices (in the '79 summer there were petrol shortages)...Virgin records promoted a number of discs inc' Penetrations 'Coming up for air' at 'A Special Price' of £2.99

Colour me musically naive, at the age of 45, but after reading about this album in Simon Reynolds' great post-punk history "Rip It Up and Start Again", I felt I had to get to hear it some time. One day I was in my local record emporium and realised I must be listening to PiL - the familiar whining drawl of John Lydon but combined with a raw dubby bass and drum beat. I asked the shop assistant and yes, a copy of "Second edition" was in the CD player. Knowing my predilection for vinyl, he said "we've got a Metal Box in the second-hand section", and since then I had my eye on it. An impromptu half-price sale day gave me the chance to pick up a bargain - less than 20 notes!. OK the tin is black, the vinyl's not mint and the insert is missing, but the raw energy of the music is not.I don't think I could have liked this record in 1979. I was just 11, and although I was into pop by then, pop was the extent of it. Fortunately the charts were chock full with interesting stuff from the Police to M to Gary Numan, but I was pretty oblivious to anything not in the top 40, and punk had "happened" before my musical ears had opened, thus the avant-garde sound emanating from the likes of PiL would have been beyond me. As Simon observes in his book, music moves so fast in ones youth, that one rarely pauses to turn back and revisit or review for anything missed. Thus it was for me and my tastes grew through electronic pop taking in soul, funk hip hop, electro and finally house and techno as the late 80s rave wave took over.But now I'm old and have time to reflect - and it is amazing to listen back to the material coming out in the post-punk era - new wave and experimental music that was trying in ways far more radical than punk, just less noisily and in-your-face, to completely change the structure and nature of music. These same things were later achieved in different ways by Acid House and Techno, but to hear a band, playing instruments and singing, with fairly minimal post-produciton, and yet come up with a sound that is comparable on many levels to the weirdness of Acid House, or the space of techno is a real ear-opener to me. Hats off!

Thanks for the nIce story, but forgive me, I do not understand how one could compare the massive outburst of sound, the richness and deepness of records like these with the cheap quirkiness of Acid - origin of the dogma having to put rhythms into format, ending an era of inspired freeform production approach.
I did have two copies of this but my idiot brother decided to give one away to one of hid friends when I was abroad in the Army.
I've been listening to this album for over 20 years and have only just had the opportunity to listen to the 45-RPM cuts. I was overcome, goosebumps shimmering over my entire skin, tears filling my eyes, and was filled with yearning to melt into each track. The difference in definition (in comparison to the 2xLP reissue) is not subtle.
Could you go more into detail please? I only listened to the metal box.
