Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave who became a conductor on the Underground Railroad, leading slaves to freedom before the Civil War, all while carrying a bounty on her head. But she was also a nurse, a Union spy and a women’s suffrage supporter
Harriet was more of a behind the scenes type. She was arguably the most successful conductor on the Underground Railroad, physically risking her life to shepherd escaped slaves to safety.

I have read all the biographies on the autobiography of Harriet Tubman and thought to myself this is very much like Cecil B. DeMille's 'Union Pacific' and the expansion of the railroad from east to west. Tubman's underground passage is from south to north, leading into Niagara Falls in Canada.
The Women on 20s campaign has declared that America needs the face of a woman on its currency and that woman should be abolitionist Harriet Tubman. As a feminist, I think this campaign is well-intentioned. On one hand, replacing the face of Andrew Jackson – a man whose wealth was made on the backs of enslaved black people – with Tubman’s image sounds like an idyllic reversal of fortune. But in examining Tubman’s life, it’s clear that putting her face on America’s currency would undermine her legacy.
Approximately 1844, Harriet married a free man named John Tubman and lived with him in a state of semi-slavery. Her status changed with the death of her master in 1847 and his son's death in 1849. Fearing that she was to be sold and sent south, Tubman decided to run away. With the help of a sympathetic white woman, Tubman got her chance. She wended her way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, using the North Star as a nightly guide. There she secured employment and began to save part of her earnings
