Alex Faickney Osborn (May 24, 1888 – May 5, 1966) was an advertising executive and the author of the creativity technique named brainstorming. In 1919, Osborn joined with Bruce Fairchild Barton and Roy Sarles Durstine to form the BDO advertising agency. Osborn acted as manager of BDO's Buffalo branch. He was largely responsible for the 1928 merger of BDO (Barton, Durstine & Osborn) with the George Batten Company to create BBDO.

In 1941 Alex Osborn, an advertising executive, found that conventional business meetings were inhibiting the creation of new ideas and proposed some rules designed to help stimulate them. He was looking for rules which would give people the freedom of mind and action to spark off and reveal new ideas. You can read Alex Osborn's original approach in his book "Applied Imagination". The wildfire spread of brainstorming. Since its birth in 1941, brainstorming has spread throughout the world. Nevertheless, it is used by nearly all of the world's largest companies and across a wide range of departments. Charities, government organizations and commercial companies all shout its praises.
The purpose of this book is to present the principles and procedures of creative thinking. Chapters included are, the all importance of imagination, indispensability of creativity in science. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
Alex Osborn wrote the following: 'Emotional drive is self-starting and largely automatic, whether based on hunger, fear, love, or ambition. For all of us, a good rule is always to encourage ideas�?�to encourage speaking up as well as thinking u. 'Whatever creative success I gained was due to my belief that creative power can be stepped up by effort, and that there are ways in which we can guide our creative thinking.
