They sound good, but it’s missing the heaviness I like. Clocking in just over half an hour, the eight-song album sees Cloud Nothings capture their onstage appeal with help from Dunn, who Baldi describes as technically minded without relying on technology to perfect the live sound. I’m obsessed with the idea of energy at the moment, says Baldi. That’s how I thought of this record: seven short, and one long, bursts of intense, controlled chaos.

On their last album, 2017’s Life Without Sound, Cloud Nothings dialed back the rage and softened their bite. It’s not as if they went full . circa Around the Sun or anything; it still delivered the riffs, and frontman Dylan Baldi’s songwriting was typically sharp, but the performances were strangely flat compared to its feverish predecessors. Where the guitars previously would have erupted, they merely preened and sparkled. It was Cloud Nothings’ one album since becoming a bona fide band that never quite achieved liftoff.
