Queen were aware that punk rock was rebelling its way into the music scene, and Freddie had the pleasure of crossing paths with Sid Vicious in between recording sessions. Queen's A Day at the Races (Elektra 6E 101) - from the start, Queen has aimed high. You have to have a lot of confidence in this business. said the group's lead singer Freddie Mercury after the band's first hit in 1973. It's useless saying to yourself, 'Maybe I'm not good enough, maybe I'd better settle for second place'. The whole group aimed for the top spot. We're not going to be content with anything else.

The album seemed to go about the typical Queen formula of bombast and genre-mixing, but had a more cohesive vision and overall sound. The musical picture was completely in focus instead of the inconsistency of previous releases, and thus the public seemed to give it their highest praises. Naturally, this led to certain questions on everybody's minds: what will the next record be like" Will it be similar or throw things up a bit" Will the songwriting style be altered" Well, on December of 1976, everybody's questions were answered
