It is with great pride that we present our interview with Jim Kerr from the seminal Scottish band Simple Minds. We met with Jim just after soundcheck when Simple Minds performed at The Orpheum theatre here in Vancouver, Canada. The following is only part of the entire interview (see our Patreon page to view it in its entirety) with the affable Mr. Kerr. We touched on early days in Scotland, watching live music, early influences and which album he'd have liked to have been a fly on the wall during its creation

Simple Minds' Jim Kerr: 'I’d rather see De Niro than Bowie or Byrne'. We’d just finished Sparkle in the Rain, the biggest, most bombastic album we’d done. So when it came to Don’t You (Forget About Me), I ramped up the intro with these massive power chords. It was almost a caricature – I associated powerchords with American AOR.

Back then Simple Minds were still finding our way in North America and needing all the support we could muster. Luckily, we got plenty of that from Bobby Gayle and many others in Toronto who went out their way to show much love for our music. He was desperately committed to getting airplay for those early Minds tracks, and I have vivid memories of being in the car with Bobby as we travelled to the various radio stations with hope in our heart. Releasing the album was of course hugely important to Simple Minds r.

Simple Minds were like crystalline gods to me", were his exact words and by my calculations Bradfield would have been eleven at the end of this distinct phase of the Minds' development. A decade or so previously, Jim Kerr was embarking on his own musical pilgrimage from a housing estate on the south side of Glasgow. Simple Minds' new album Big Music is out now via their own label.
