Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix. An entry in the long-running Dragon Quest video game series, it was released in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 in July 2017, and worldwide for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in September 2018.

Dragon Quest V is the title with the strongest overall plot in the series. It's emotional and plays well on its generational draw. V is also the first mainline title to introduce monster wrangling and party members, which also has plot justification. Which version to try? The Nintendo DS and Mobile versions are largely the same (and unlike IV, still has its Party Chat in all versions), so it's all a matter of which version you'd rather play.

A platypunk is a recurring enemy in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest IV, they are essentially a cross between a platypus and a monkey, the 'punk' in their names likely referencing their Mohawks. Platypunks are short, round creatures with duckbills, bird-like claws, long, monkey-esque tails, and a Mohawk. They are often depicted as being white and silver furred and their eyes have a roundness to them that is similar to that seen in Slime eyes.

Dragon Quest 5 is a rare jewel. This is a game that carried the burden of being a sequel in one of the most successful franchises of all-time. Dragon Quest 6 was then planned to be released as Dragon Warrior 5, but Enix of America’s luck ran out before that could happen. Given the headaches that Square would later go through to straighten out the misnumbered Final Fantasy games, perhaps that’s a good thing. The next chance for English gamers to see this game wouldn’t come for more than 10 years. You can come back later when you’re older and see what you missed, but I felt that was a nice little touch. The passage of time in the game also allows it to throw a bunch of bricks up in the air that land much later on. It’s neat when these nested plot elements finally hatch, recalling things that may have slipped your mind up until the very moment that they make their way back into the story.
