With his variegated tone and rock-solid technique, Rubinstein makes these works sound remarkably well composed for the piano, something many Finnish pianists have failed to do. And with his probing interpretations, Rubinstein finds depths in these works that most other pianists of any nationality fail to notice. This is all the more remarkable in that Rubinstein's recordings of the piano sonata and the suite called Kyllikki were world premieres when they were originally released in 1971

Perhaps the most pleasant surprise will be Rubinstein’s Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 17, 20, 21, 23, and 24. Here Rubinstein’s gifts as a chamber music player are evident in the form of some truly delightful interplay between solo and orchestra. Witness the coda of Concerto No. 17 (sample). It may not be authentic, but it’s very stylish and consistently enjoyable. Presumably there will be a Beethoven box in this series that features the Leinsdorf concerto cycle, but aside from this single unfortunate repertory choice, this is a mostly impressive set and a very good deal at budget price.
