An early washboard jazz band assembled by Decca records that recorded two sessions in New York in August 1934 and July 1935. Composed of Taft Jordan on trumpet, Carl Wade/Elmer Williams on tenor saxophone/clarinet, Ben Smith on alto saxophone, Steve Washington on banjo/guitar, George "Ghost" Howell on bass, Jake Fenderson on washboard/vocals, and occasionally Eddie Foster and an unknown trio on vocals. Piano player on both sessions is unknown.
The Washboard Rhythm Kings, also known as the Washboard Rhythm Boys, Georgia Washboard Stompers (1934-1935), or Alabama Washboard Stompers (1930-1932) were a loose aggregation of jazz performers, many of high calibre, who recorded as a group for various labels between about 1930 and 1935. The band played good-time swinging music, featuring spirited vocals, horns, a washboard player and occasionally kazoo, and were popular around the time of the Great Depression.
